Project Design Priorities

Innovation and Collaboration
The building was designed with an open, communal layout incorporating several study spaces to encourage multidisciplinary collaboration. It includes 15 learning spaces, five seminar rooms, computer teaching labs, a 160-seat auditorium, and three large classrooms that can be converted to host 300 people for symposia, conferences, and special events.

Sustainability
With efficient heating, cooling, lighting, and high-performance insulation, the Joyce Cummings Center supports Tufts’ commitment to becoming carbon-neutral on the Medford/Somerville campus by 2050. Sustainability features include triple-glazed windows, a rooftop solar array, and a plaza that incorporates drought-resistant plants.
